There is a trend in this series of keeping the background cleaned up and polished and the final stages before you go down the aisle is no different. Since this really applies to both sides of a wedding, I’ll keep it pretty generic. However, the same principles as the getting ready rooms apply here. Walk in and take a good look at what is on the walls, in the corners, on tables, is the lighting natural light or is there a florescent strobe light above you, etc. Next, decide what you do want in your photos and how you want the images to look..
If you are trying to create dimension, request a room that has natural window light that can flood the room so you can turn off the overhead lights. If one is not available, consider your options of possibly arriving at the last minute. If you are drawn to the natural look, you have options so don’t be afraid to call me up and set up a time to walk through where you will be waiting around with your party.
What I usually see in a room that isn’t optimal is mostly clutter. Whether that’s having items stacked up, the lighting being awkward, or it’s just too cramped, the images will be focused on the part of the party that isn’t against that. So, for instance, if you can imagine a church nursery. There is usually one area that is cleared out and doesn’t look like a nursery on that ONE wall. If you are grouped in a circle, I will want to focus on those against the clean wall to ensure the best result of the photos possible. I don’t want it to look like you are getting ready there (as much as possible).
If there are NO options but the most un-photographic room, consider drapery of some type to hide the unwanted items in the background. Though this is a personal preference, it is something I get asked about all the time. Bride’s will see a blog post and ask me how they can make the most out their situation. When you spend thousands of dollars on photography, I can imagine it’s something that maybe some don’t think about until after they receive their pictures and then wish they would’ve thought about it. Which, is what this series is meant to be. Something to use as a consideration based on my point of view.
