Despite being accounting majors in the class of 2012, BJ and Olivia did not meet until the senior year in the spring. BJ went to high school (and elementary and middle school) with Meagan, who Olivia had been on the Circle K (volunteering club) board with starting freshman year of college. Olivia and Meagan grew closer the summer after junior year when they both interned for KPMG and went to national training in Orlando together. Olivia and Meagan would frequently attend parties or go to bars together during senior year (many college acquaintances thought we were roommates), so it was a normal weekday night in March 2012 when Meagan and Olivia went to O’Rourke’s. Meagan had also invited BJ, although not as a set-up. While BJ and Olivia’s paths had crossed earlier in the year, both agree that this was when they met and shared a great conversation. BJ and Olivia saw each other intermittently during the remainder of senior year before graduation. Olivia moved back to California for the summer but moved to Chicago to start her job in fall 2012. After running into each other occasionally throughout the fall, they went on their first date in December 2012.
They decided to extend the President’s Day weekend in February 2016 into a 4-day weekend. They had discussed going somewhere, but at four weeks out, Olivia figured it was too close to the date to plan anything too big. IF they were going to go somewhere, it would be in driving distance. However, 3 weeks out, they booked flights to Jamaica and a 3-night stay at an all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay. Their flight into Jamaica looked beautiful the whole time…until they got closer and encountered some clouds and overcast skies. So, while BJ had wanted to do a private dinner the first night, the resort encouraged him to wait at least one night. (And was heavily laying on the pressure to wait TWO nights, until Valentine’s Day.) Knowing that she did not want the Valentine’s Day cliche, BJ scheduled the dinner for Saturday night. (Which was wonderful because Valentine’s Day at the resort was OVER THE TOP. Employees dressed as Cupid, in wings and tights. Enough said.) They had to meet a resort employee at one particular bar and on the way there, they were stopped by a resort photographer. Having an inkling of what was going on this weekend, she was wondering if something was going to happen in front of this fountain as they were having pictures taken. But no. They took their pictures and continued on to the bar. Once the resort employee arrived, he escorted them down to their table on the beach, complete with tiki torches and candles. He also informed them that a photographer would be swinging by for more pictures. Less than 5 minutes later, he arrived. They took photos at the table and then he asked them to stand in order to take some pictures on the beach. Yet again, she thought something might happen. But no. However, after completing their dinner, prior to dessert arriving, BJ stood up, walked around the table, and got down on one knee.
I mean, talk about a swoon-worthy proposal.
